After rumors that Spark Unlimited were working on Battlefront 3, it now seems that although they are indeed working on a Star Wars game, but not the next installment of the Battlefront series.
Evidence is piling up that the developers could be set to reveal Star Wars: The Force Unleashed 3 at this years E3. On to exhibit A…
A job listing from Spark revealed that the developers were looking for someone to work on a third-person action-adventure game. The listing also mentioned that the game was part of a “high-profile science fiction franchise”.
Not long after this, a resume showed up in LinkedIn (or should I say LeakedIn amirite?) that lists work on a “third-person sword-fighting game (well known IP, Xbox 360, PS3)”. Spark are also looking for a multiplayer engineer “with experience in maintaining/extending an existing network framework for a AAA game”.
Now connect the dots, put the pieces together and that sounds like a Star Wars game if ever I heard one. LucasArts are set to unveil a secret project at E3 that will run on Unreal Engine 3 and has already been in development for a year.
Like many others I initially thought that the secret project was Battlefront 3, but the reference to a sword-fighting game gives cause to rethink, since Battlefront is primarily a shooter. Of course, the timing could be coincidence. It may be that these occurrences all refer to different games, and that LucasArts are working on The Force Unleashed 3 but are keeping that under wraps for now and announcing Battlefront 3 at E3. We’ll soon find out.
I think, sadly, that Battlefront 3 is dead and buried. Which is a shame because I loved the first two.
Force Unleashed III was an almost certainty, the second game left such massive plot holes in it’s cliff hanger ending that there was no way they couldn’t finish off the series.
Despite the second game being a travesty compared to the first one, and most games to be fair, Star Wars fans the world round would want some resolution and explanation as to where the two massively powerful force users went after the Force Unleashed II. It would have made for a very different original trilogy without that loose end tied up.
