Not So Retro Gaming – Warcraft III

NRG (Not so Retro Gaming) is a brand new series of articles where semi-old games are reviewed. Welcome to the first installment of NRG!

Warcraft 3 is a RTS game made by the gaming God Blizzard. As everyone reading this will probably know WoW takes off where Warcraft 3 ends. It came out in 2002 and was followed closely by the expansion Frozen Throne in 2003. So what made the Warcraft series so good that one of the worlds biggest MMO’s could be built from its lore…

Warcraft 3′s campaign starts off with the player controlling a small band of footmen and Arthas, the young eager Prince of Lordaeron. Arthas starts off pretty weak, barley able to kill a single grunt without some help. However as the Human campaign progresses Arthas becomes extremely powerful and can take on entire armies with only a few men by his side. As the campaign progresses new units and buildings are also unlocked as some missions require you to get your own resources and make your own units.  After completing the human campaign there’s also Undead, Orc and Night Elf campaigns to complete, keeping you entertained for a fair while.

Now onto the gameplay, Warcraft 3 uses very simple controls to enable new players to easily adapt. Playing is as simple as left clicking and right clicking. However learning to play Warcraft 3 at a good level can take months of practice. This is because the A.I can be quite smart (Im not even going to mention the hardcore multiplayers) and will always use the perfect counter to your attacks. After time you will pick up on certain tactics, counters and be able to defend and attack at your leisure. So go ahead and put the A.I on easy and send wait it out a for a few turns. This will help you understand the very basics of Warcraft 3.

Another aspect that made Warcraft 3 a legend was its highly changeable level editor. It comes free with the game and allows players to create everything from maps to units. Frozen Throne also brought a new update allowing players to create there own campaigns, however you needed to have allot of knowledge with making the maps to understand how to use the cameras and extensive use of animating doors. The level editor can also be allot of fun just to play around with when bored. As it enables you to create an unlimited amount of units and have colossal battles between peons and peasants while also having dragons and giants fighting on the other side of the map!

If your a WoW fan and havent played Warcraft 3 I highly reccomend that you purchase both that and the expansion as it gives a very good backstory to WoW while also being an amazing games.

Come back next week for another installment of NRG!
